SPECIAL REPORT :: Modeling / Acting

    INTERESTED IN A MODELING PORTFOLIO?

    HEAD SHOTS or ZED CARDS?

A few things you may or may not know about "the business":

    TERM GLOSSARY

    Comp Cards
Comp card is short for composite card. It presents a grouping of photos that show the person in different outfits, poses and facial expressions to enable a casting director to consider the person for a specific role. It is the "calling card" of actors and models.
To get modeling work, one should have a comp card to send out to agents. The comp card accompanies the cover letter and resume to get appointments.

The comp card also acts as the model's calling card. It can be given to agents or other people in the business as a photo reference for getting work. It shows how photogenic you are and how you can look in different situations just as if you were modeling.

An industry standard flip composite card is usually recommended. One shot appears on the front side and four shots on the back with your statistics (date of birth, hair color, height, weight and size). It typically measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches.

The card should show your personality and a range of expressions and emotions.

    Sample Image

The front side should catch people's attention and the back should show variety and personality.

It is important that your card looks like you. If you change your hair color, hair style, lose or gain weight, the card does not represent you. This can disappoint an agent or casting director when they meet you. You should update your card as often as needed.

Note: Don't let an agency print your comp cards. They will print their own logo on the card.                     You will not be able to use it to send out to other agencies.
    Business Portrait
The executive portrait can be used in press releases, web sites, company newsletters etc. They can help one to become better known, respected and advance one's career.
If you are a Realtor, Insurance Agent or a business professional who uses their portrait to develop business  then you should update your portrait frequently. Why you ask? Because your customers will subconsciously be making their decision if they want to do business with you in the first few seconds of actually meeting you.Amber.jpg
If you do not look like the photo on your business card or other business materials what kind of message are you sending your clients subconscious mind? I don't have to tell you the answer you already know. People do business with those the know and trust . If you don't look like your photo will they be able to trust you? Can you afford to take that gamble? Do the right thing and update your portrait frequently. You will be glad you did
    Head Shots
For commercials or stage work, you'll need a head shot. The tone (mood) of the shot needed can vary depending upon the use. If you already have an agent, ask them what tone or style of head shot is needed to make you most marketable for their clientèle.

Head shots are typically 8x10 in size. There are two standard formats: the actor's face showing hair, neck and shoulders; and the "three-quarters" or portrait shot which may include down to the waist.
    Zed Cards
The comp card is sometimes also called a "zed" card. The original zed card was folded using a "Z" fold and hence its name. Zed is how the letter "Z" is pronounced in England where it originated.

    F.A.Q (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q1 Do I need a head shot or a comp card?

A1: Traditionally, head shots are used for actors and comp cards for models.
Once you make contact with an agent, find out what he or she believes is best for your market and their clientèle.

Q2: What shall I bring to a photo session?

A2: For comp cards, you'll need several wardrobe changes. Bring props such as hats, visors, sunglasses etc. Also bring your hairbrush and any makeup (minimal makeup is advised)

Q3: Do I need professional photography?

A3: Home snapshots are sometimes used. You might consider the following: Do your snapshots successfully capture you? How do the snapshots hold up compared to the hundreds of other actors' or models' head shots and comp cards? If you are serious about the business, you should look as professional as you can.

Q4: I'm just getting started. Where do I send my head shot or comp card?

A4: You're generally sending these to agents who help you to get work as an actor or model. A cover letter and resume typically go along with it.

It's a good idea to do the research and learn as much as you can. Your success depends on it.
